Stories of Resilience: Mark Cuban Shares Tips for Small Businesses

Recently, I had the pleasure of interviewing Dallas Mavericks owner, Judge Shark Tank, and famous investor and entrepreneur Mark Cuban. Cuban has been a champion of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs), personally answering questions on LinkedIn and Twitter, sharing expert advice, and even encouraging her network to small shop.

During our conversation, Cuban shared actionable stories and insights for small businesses that are building their resilience during this time. Below are some responses from his webinar. To hear all of Cuba’s advice, watch the full interview.

1. How should small business leaders guide team members through this ambiguity?

Mark Cuban: When you’re leading your team, you should also want to know what they’re thinking. Ask them: what is your vision? Where is your head Your team needs to paint the picture of America 2.0 once this (pandemic) is over, so it’s time to think about what that would look like for your customers or for your industry.

If we look back 10 years after all of this, we’re going to be creating five, 10, 15, 20, or even 30 amazing companies. This idea could be sitting on that Zoom screen of one of your team members – all you have to do is ask.

2. What sales strategy would you recommend now?

Mark Cuban: Now is the time to connect rather than sell. Every person in your CRM system or your sales platform is afraid. Each of them wants to hear a reassuring voice. Call them, email or text them, especially if you already have a relationship with them, and ask them how they are doing. You don’t have to sell them now and ask them when they buy.

Being kind pays incredible dividends for everyone in the universe. If you are the company that has communicated and been kind to customers during this time, they will come back to you when the time comes.

3. What inspires you and what should others read during this time?

Mark Cuban: Heroes will be born during this period. So when it comes to reading, I tend to focus on what’s next. I think artificial intelligence (AI) is going to have a stronger presence in the future, so the book I’m reading is Rebooting AI. I also take Coursera AI courses and tutorials.

In terms of inspiration, I find my inspiration by connecting with people and helping where I can. When you see someone who is depressed and all of a sudden their morale is improving, it is as inspiring as it sounds.
