Prioritizing Mental Health to Boost Your Business: Advice from Business Leaders | Yelp

Balancing the demands of your business with your own mental health needs is no small feat. Expectations are high and giving in to the “grind culture” sometimes seems like the only option, which can put your personal well-being in the background. But it is crucial to move away from this narrative. Instead, try to focus on all the positive impacts you can have on your team, your business, and your butt. It starts with making sure you, your brain, and your sanity are taken care of and prioritized.

This topic is particularly important to me after my own experience with mental health issues. In 2018 I had a manic episode which resulted in hospitalization and I was diagnosed with bipolar disorder. I spent the next three months in intensive treatment and therapy Monday through Friday, learning more about my brain and the steps I could take to find and maintain balance. Diagnosed or not, we all need to be aware of and concerned about mental health. And when it comes to running your business, if you don’t take care of yourself, your business will suffer.

Things like getting good quality sleep or communicating openly with your team and colleagues can help your business perform better in several ways. So, in honor of Mental Health Awareness Month, we wanted to share some tips and perspective from other entrepreneurs who are going through the same juggling act of putting themselves, their well-being first. being, to their family, to their friends, to their team members and to their company.

Owner of a real estate company Brad Davis was torn between end-of-life care for his mother and the demands of running a successful real estate business. With the help of colleagues and counterparts, his clients were supported while he was away to put family first.

“I want to do a better job prioritizing my free time. Because when I get refreshed, I will show myself much better and in large numbers for my customers. To be able to give the best of myself, to be an excellent facilitator of a transaction, to be the first class relational broker that I know I can be, it really requires having a certain balance between my work and what have you got.”

For many entrepreneurs juggling a family, it can seem like you never do enough for your business or home because you’re being pulled in so many directions. Alyssa Bayer, founder of milk + honey spashares her secret to success: recognizing that you’ll always feel like you could do more.

There really isn’t much time when I can just unplug and feel like there’s nothing for me, is there? But having a team in place, I started delegating everything I could.

“And recognizing that with my business, I should only be using my resources on the things that I add the most value to and where I really contribute. I trust my managers to respond appropriately. They’re really good They don’t do it right all the time because they’re human too, but giving everyone the benefit of the doubt, really delegating everything you can. And I do that in my house too. You know, we we all have very little time in the day, and [you have to make] sure you spend your time on the most important things.

Making time for your family or other interests outside of work is important and valuable. Ultimately, it will make you a better performer. And it is important to have confidence in this. But it is also very difficult to do. For many of us, taking a day to reset or unwind feels like falling behind. It’s like we’re spending too much time inactive when we could be doing something else. But we have to trust the value of that. We have to trust the benefits of refueling and recharging. Learn to just shut down, shut down for a full day, and really trust that the world isn’t going to fall apart. And if I’m “late”, I have to learn to let my body settle there and trust to have more of myself to give when I come back.

For entrepreneurs, remember that you, your health and your well-being are important. Your business can’t be at its best if you’re not in good health, and it’s always a good idea to get away and rest and relax. For parting wisdom, take this advice from Aaron Seriff-Cullick, owner of Paper Road Bakery.

“It’s so hard to be a business owner. You are all alone in it. And even if you hear from other people, oh, I’ve worked so hard. You really have no way of knowing if you are doing the right thing. So if there’s anything I can do to let people know, [it’s] to reduce the pressure on themselves and treat themselves with a little more compassion. This is a message that everyone needs to hear.
